Today we're launching some changes on Google Images to help connect users and useful websites. This will include removing the View Image button. The Visit button remains, so users can see images in the context of the webpages they're on.pic.twitter.com/n76KUj4ioD

The Search by Image button is also being removed. Reverse image search *still works* through the way most people use it, from the search bar of Google Images.

For those asking, yes, these changes came about in part due to our settlement with Getty Images this week (see also https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/15/17017864/google-removes-view-image-button-from-search-results …). They are designed to strike a balance between serving user needs and publisher concerns, both stakeholders we value.

Ultimately, Google Images is a way for people to discover information in cases where browsing images is a better experience than text. Having a single button that takes people to actionable information about the image is good for users, web publishers and copyright holders.

This is a ridiculous inconvenience. I've never wanted anything from getty images, and would happily see their results removed, or just apply this change to content any pages which make a mention of getty images. I

I can't count how many times I've viewed a site for an image and it's buried, they show some weird scaled down version, or the site is absolutely riddles with ads, view image was perfect to bypass annoying pop ups in the browser, and new windows being opened.

Getty images are often stolen for fake news memes like this one turning a 2013 Greek rioter into a 2017 fake Berkeley protester One of the best tools for finding original photos & debunk fake photos is reverse image search It's like you want the destructors of fact to winpic.twitter.com/X6262crI7s

Glad to know your product (that is, us the users) aren't who you actually care about. De-list @GettyImages instead of screwing with your users.

Wow, never thought I'd ever have any reason to use Bing instead of Google but once again Google has proven they can keep surprising me. Bing is actually pretty nice now that I've been given a reason to try it out, may just use this instead from now on entirely.

This is terrible news for me. Google has always been a great way to gather reference images. There should be a better way than this.

I've got DuckDuckGo as my default but the image search is pretty bad, i've had to switch to google a few times when looking for something in particular. DDG has definitely improved though and will hopefully keep doing so.

I'm guessing the billions of users aren't considered stakeholders, despite the fact that they are the ones that ultimately natter.

Balance suggests a compromise. This is just giving them everything they want at the expense of the user. I'd have been happy for example to opt out of seeing any Getty content in your search results in exchange for not losing functionality.
