Next sin: keep your communications as public as possible! Decisions shouldn't always be inaccessible to people.

Technical lag can be measured in versions, in bugs, in vulnerability- depending on the areas important to you. Great to see metrics not being reduced to be so simple they aren't meaningful

As a software engineer (job title) who does community management (even though my job description says I wrote code), I feel this slide from
@mbbroberg. Community may be valued but is rarely its own entity in an organisation.#CHAOSSconpic.twitter.com/sB4UpzL5NR – mjesto: Ibis Brussels Centre Ste Catherine

So... yep, we agree we _should_ measure. Next: _what_ to measure? I won't type up the whole slide, but there's a nice list here!

Memory is strange
ever been angry at a person who booked you a 5am flight to save $200...
... and that person was you.
We aren't perfect, we forget things, try to save $$$ instead of
we even forget the name of the famous painting "persistence of memory"

Depsite these incentives, academics need more awareness of open "business" models and open ways of working. We also need to be able to measure the open projects, so we can report if they're successful. An example (undesirable) metric is number of patents granted!

Finally: Try to understand what it might be like to be someone else - understand that others need you to listen, understand, and see different points of view. Be humble and aware of your own limited views!

This is sooo fascinating - seeing the differences between prs in gnome and openstack - but in both cases, almost native or native speakers made most of the PRs. Native speakers were more likely to write understandable comments.

@isaferreira_57 studied a set of open source projects, to verify who are native vs non-native english speakers, then compared langs to english to find how similar langs were (e.g. Chinese & hebrew v dissimilar to English, but some euro languages are closer).#CHAOSSconpic.twitter.com/s6RVAjcXl0 – mjesto: Ibis Brussels Centre Ste Catherine
