It's becoming an increasingly popular analysis that Putin has lost his mind and the war represents a huge shift but that means ignoring years of insane behavior at home and abroad — poisoning a man in London with polonium, deploying Novichok, sending "secret" soldiers to Crimea.

Queer activists are among those staying—or returning to Ukraine—to fight the invasion by Russia and the assault on LGBT rights that is central to Putin’s worldview. "People are not coming back to the closet,” one activist told

Anytime a Russian opposition figure is attacked there’s a lot of mental gymnastics to try and explain that Putin didn’t order it or know about it. The use of a substance like Novichok on Navalny makes that a lot harder.

People in my mentions want to think Putin is doing this to stoke division in the West. Sorry, being a reactionary conservative who trades in gender stereotypes and anti-LGBT bigotry is central to his ideology, and if it makes you uncomfortable to agree with him on this, well.

He’s not suicidal, but if he goes down he’ll take as many people as possible with him. As one of his top propagandists said, what’s the point of a world without Russia in it, and Putin is defining his takeover of Ukraine as existential, and defining himself as the Russian state. https://twitter.com/InsidePolitics/status/1500493909889216514 …
