The "cat person" essay in the New Yorker is so bizarre, awkward, relatable and horrifying. pic.twitter.com/HESB6YcuYz

I have a new essay on safety culture,
@FreeRangeKids,@JonHaidt and@glukianoff, the short story "Cat Person," and how we've all become "indoor cats" later this week. It will be my debut for@AreoMagazine and I am very happy to get to write for this wonderful publication! -
I find it interesting that people aren't picking up on the irony of this headline--which is clearly intentional, not a slip--and which is tagged to Amanda Hess's story below the fold, which righteously castigates him. It's like when people thought "Cat Person" was an essay. https://twitter.com/astridkie42/status/1036298428991586304 …

My thoughts about the Caitlin Flanagan essay: If young women find “Cat Person” or stories like the Ariz Ansari encounter so relatable, that reveals a couple of troubling truths:

Cat Person really showed that fiction can speak to our moment. It made me wish there was a place where you could publish short fiction topically. One of the reasons that essays are replacing stories has to be that stories are two years old by the time anybody reads them.

Asked the students in my personal essay class if they read many personal essays and they were like “Oh yeah, totally, Cat Person!”
-
Almost done with my thoughtful essay about how Cat Person and the gorilla channel tweet touched a national nerve that made people think they were nonfiction. Just have to throw a reference Orson Welles' War of the Worlds in there and we're good to go!

The conversation around the "Cat Person" short story reiterates the same old bias against personal essays as artless and feminine https://www.buzzfeed.com/sarahmenkedick/whos-afraid-of-the-personal-essay?bftwnews&utm_term=4ldqpgc#4ldqpgc …

Ahem ahem .
@zafatista's essay was a@Longreads pick this week, along with "Cat Person." So yes, I am a very proud editor tonight: https://catapult.co/stories/naima-coster-debut-novel-my-editor-was-black … -
No one in my office, myself included, has read the Cat Person essay. We are in the dark, and have no idea what it is, if it’s fiction or not, or what it means. Is it bad that none of us read it or can we just move on. I also have no idea if this is insensitive or not

A thought-provoking essay in Overland on the recent 'Cat Person' phenomenon by one of Sweatshop's most dynamic new members,

Just saw a man refer to ‘Cat Person’ as an essay

'Cat Person' is not an essay:
@megangarber on the impulse to undermine fiction that is written by women http://theatln.tc/2nSgiQL pic.twitter.com/z2WFg9Id3P

interested in understanding why “Cat Person” is being referred to as an “essay,” a “piece,” or an “article.” wonder if it’s the subject matter/style or the fact that people talking about it aren’t familiar with short fiction as a form

On "Cat Person," which is not a personal essay, and “relatability” as a marker of literary excellence. http://ow.ly/xzM130h9B4v pic.twitter.com/mtYRpQgibD
