Uhhh... what? Shaping by the heartland is better? Is that where all the ‘Real Americans’ live? Is that the only place where ‘American Values’ can be found? This is offensive and disgraceful. https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1222632372362981378 …

Now, when you say “American Heartland,” are you referring to Harvard, or McKinsey, or...? https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1222632372362981378 …

Honest question: What's the "American Heartland"? For my immigrant grandparents, it was Brooklyn. https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1222632372362981378 …

Hi, New Yorkers are just as American as anyone else. I’m so sick of this nonsense. Geography doesn’t confer virtue. The “American Heartland” is all of us. My vote and my existence shouldn’t count less. And yet here we are.

In the face of unprecedented challenges, we need a president whose vision was shaped by the American Heartland rather than the ineffective Washington politics we’ve come to know and expect.
-
Also: talk to some of your staffers of color. They will explain what the ‘Real America/heartland’ stuff sounds like to them. Every American is a Real American. Living in the heartland doesn’t make your values better, your work harder, your integrity deeper. https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1222632372362981378 …

From now on whenever someone discusses the “American heartland” I’m going to assume they mean Queens which is the most diverse place in the country and watch them try to explain that I’m wrong without being racist https://twitter.com/petebuttigieg/status/1222632372362981378 …

Say what you want about the American Heartland, but it's a great place to score some meth and bareback an Evangelical preacher.
-
He is saying there are values that are specific to people in America’s heartland. That those of us on the coasts, or folks who’ve spent time in DC don’t share those American Values. Literally—that is what he is saying. https://twitter.com/SkylarJordan/status/1222670724852338689 …

I was not shaped by the American Heartland. I was born and raised in California, a state of nearly 40 million people. Thus, I am not a real American. I am a Replicant, a son of Pakistani immigrants. I drink elitist coffee because it is not from a coffee shop in the Rust Belt.
-
I crossed a line. I made a highly problematic tweet about Evangelical preachers in the American Heartland, one implying bareback sodomy. A blatantly errant generalization. I've since become aware that some insist on their pool boys wearing condoms. My humble apologies. Namaste.
-
Can we finally settle this please because I'm really confused: who is a "real" & "ordinary" American? Also, what is "real" America? I'm asking because I've lived here my entire life & unfortunately I'm not from the Rust Belt, Midwest or American heartland.

One of the reasons I decided to write about
@IlhanMN this last summer is that she has as much claim to be part of the American heartland as Indiana faculty brats like me and Pete. Probably more. https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1222632372362981378 …Prikaži ovu nit -
Today,
@realDonaldTrump will sign the historic USMCA into law. Here’s how this modernized trade deal will help the American heartland, according to@ChuckGrassley

Hi. I live in said "heartland." Like, the real heartland, not a Chicago suburb. And this take, implying that people who live in diverse and urban areas aren't as "American" as someone like me is how we fucking got where we are. So maybe rethink this tweet. https://twitter.com/PeteButtigieg/status/1222632372362981378 …

Reminder: the idea of the “American Heartland” is racially coded language used to portray Black folks, immigrants, people of color, Jews, Muslims, & people in cities as not truly American — despite our communities living all over the country. Every American is American. Period.
-
Pete i'm going to ask you to stop using American Heartland == ethical. Can I tell you why? Andy Griffith was never real Indiana had a higher KKK participation than any other state. Nothing about it being DC makes it evil, it's who we send and when we stop paying attention.
-
I’m not from the American Heartland. I was born on the coast of North Carolina, near a military base. My family is full of Marines & a few Navy, I’ve lived in NC, FL, & in CA. I’m a wife, mother, tax payer, lesbian & very much an American. Tired of our votes dismissed as elite.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t your portion of the ‘American Heartland’ elect Mike Pence governor? Maybe we could do with less of that kind of shaping.

Manufacturing is down, farm bankruptcies are up. So far the casualties in Trump’s trade war are American families in the heartland. https://bit.ly/2S8Nfo0
