3. Borreri have a few other distinctive aspects. In winter they tend to die down early (but after Male ferns) unless sheltered (as yours are) and be not very flaky-scaly at the stem bases, and the bases are often long-bare; here's a typical view from Edinburgh showing this.pic.twitter.com/OUfREHzkei

Managed to get a clear shot of this stunning Firecrest at RSPB Rainham Marshes this afternoon. Difficult to photograph as they never seem to keep still at all.

Just for fun as the butterfly season approaches, can you name these four species?

Egyptian Geese
@Britnatureguide make excellent parents - perhaps one reason why this introduced species continues to flourish. From Ilford in Essex yesterday#ourworldisworthsavingpic.twitter.com/AutuGOkZdE -
Highly recommend Barhill Woods Kircudbright to anyone. Thanks to

8. Compare here Western Scaly Male Fern ssp affinis where the bottom next-to-stem down-pointing leaflets are part-joined to their axis (here quite fully), not very lobey (can be a little bit at base) & they can seem quite thick/plasticky; the blackenings are visible here too -pic.twitter.com/nhGvCFmM6P
-
Here's a better example of a "cat's-ear" effect that may be seen (or perhaps call it the batman effect...)pic.twitter.com/EXILqWgNni
-
7. If you look through the veins at the light, there's a strong tendency for the secondary veins to be weak in transmission of light, as seen here -pic.twitter.com/tfYSFhMMEP
-
2. Once you have decided it's a Scaly Male, it's best to look at the bottom-most pinnules (smallest leaflets on these) closest to the stem and pointing downwards. In borreri they are very lobey and you can see a clear air gap around their stalk, all as arrowed here -pic.twitter.com/R7cWiwSh6b
-
For Scaly Male ferns generally look for the darkened joins onto the main frond stem, as arrowed; sometimes only a v small amount of darkening, and on young ones may be hard to notice. You can see it from above, but most obvious when viewed from below where all is cleaner&lighter:pic.twitter.com/O0r3hZmbhs
-
12. I should add that when you look at the veins of ssp affinis (Western SMF) they tend to be bright and clear like this -pic.twitter.com/8uLthtGjKF
