You're never too old to do a PhD, if you want to do one then go for it. A PhD is a learning experience, you will learn a lot about yourself (& others) along the way. You are more than your age & you will contribute in ways no other person can because you are unique, embrace that.

Don’t put off your life for after the deadline, for deadlines never end.

Anyone else ever wonder if academic conferences are actually a series of elaborate experiments to see what happens when you put large groups of introverts together and force them to make small talk?

Quick tip for presentations: Rather only show 30% of your data, take the time to explain them properly and have your audience understand everything, than to show 70% of your data, rush through them and lose your audience in the first 5min.

U of Toronto was my 6th choice for a
#phd. A non-academic career was not my first choice. To those dealing with disappointment right now, may you come to see it as a blessing with time. And may you build an amazing life with the hand you're dealt.@AcademicChatter#withaphd -
Hello. You can be an academic and enjoy “trash” tv. That’s it. That’s all I wanted to say.

How are you supposed to keep working, writing, presenting a paper, when everything around you is falling apart? Suddenly, history and art don't seem that important when you're in financial crisis or jobless.

For everyone who needs to hear this: *Having a paper rejected does not mean you did not work hard enough* The hard fact: acceptance or rejection is controlled by several external factors completely beyond our control. YOU DID YOUR BEST

How much do you care about your grades on your PhD program? I have heard at this point, people don't really care as much.

If you’re humble enough to know that your dissertation has many limitations...you’re going to be a really good scientist!

I asked for a reference letter from a faculty and was asked to write it first. Any thoughts, suggestions how to write it, please. I find it difficult to write about myself

Using Slack in my online classes has been very successful. We have a channel for questions: every time a student posts a question and by the time I see it, other students have answered adequately. Talk about a real class community.

When someone says..
it's always been that way
that's just the game
well it worked out for me
Remind them that..
we don't have to live in the past
we can change the parts we don't like
we can make it work for others too
You have more power than you think. -
Shout-out to anyone that moves to another country to follow their dreams. Adapting to lang/env/cultural differences whilst studying/researching is mind blowing. It can be difficult for those who have never done this to appreciate just how big that is, it's incredibly impressive.

The work world isn't real.
I know it feels real, but it's not. We invent it. Jobs and companies are created out of human imagination.
Yes, do think about how you fit into this world. But also imagine the world you'll create once you learn how.
