    A4: DER have and will have a huge impact on forecasting needs for utilities. Renewables are in general not programmable, so to keep balanced the grid Utilities need to continuously forecast the expected production of each generation plant

    Distributed Energy Resources push the forecast to be more granular (substation, circuit, or meter level) in order to correctly understand the demand and supply interaction. More volatility in demand and supply creates a need for smaller time periods.

    “Duck Curve” occurs when solar penetration creates a dip in net load at midday as gen. peaks, followed by increased peak demand at sunset—creating two humps. Duck Curve can create grid reliability challenges esp. where there’s no automated frequency response.

    Q3: Forecasting this properly helps utilities schedule generation resources optimally.EVs are best charged during low-load hours, so utilities need to forecast effects of time-of-use pricing to make sure the shift does not cause a shift to a new peak.

    A2: Climate change is bringing more frequent and more extreme weather events. There is a direct link between weather and energy - not just storms, but water (for hydro facilities), cloud cover for solar, wind speed, & droughts resulting in wildfires.
