The skype interview has become standard for university faculty positions. Yet many candidates seem unprepared and don't know what to expect. I wrote a blog post to provide some tips -- hope you find helpful.

Trying to decide if I should pursue a PhD or not. Currently in my 1st year of an Environmental Studies MS and dream of a career in academia. I’m a single parent of a 5 year old and am geographically limited. Am I crazy to even consider it?

Any other PhD-ers feeling guilty for not working? It's the coldest, darkest time of the year (literally and metaphorically) and all I want to do is knit socks and listen to Leonard Cohen

  6. PhD students, don't try to slay every dragon or turn every stone. Write your thesis with passion. Say why you cared about the topic and what you discovered as you explored it. Reflect on your findings (especially the surprises). Before handing in, edit out the data dump.

There is old zen saying, "Before Enlightenment chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment chop wood, carry water". Is that true for PhD too? Or life significantly changes after PhD? What’s your experience?

My grad peeps. You ever got the feeling of inadequacy for not going into industry and instead chose to go into grad school? I constantly get that dreading feeling and I want to know if y'all get it as well.

After a few days off with family and friends, I'm back to my thesis feeling refreshed and ready to work. Now I know why people tell me it's important to take a few days off now & again

How do you maintain motivation in grad school? I just finished my first MA semester and I haven't felt thrilled by research or curious about anything for 1.5 years. :/ It's not imposter syndrome. I know I'm good at it. Research makes me feel dead.

Also "policy recommendations" in academic writing tend to be pretty flimsy (These findings have policy implications! The End!), which often won't fly outside of journal articles.

  16. What is the funniest Journal article you have read? Could be topic, title, or hilarious random zinger in the text. Share with us. We love a good laugh.

To get into a grad school I need to be in contact with the faculty beforehand apparently? Is it cool to just up and email someone you don't know about their work because you might be interested in attending their school/working with them in a year or so?

If you have not figured out how to explain you PhD work to family. Answer the what, when, why, who, when and how with metaphors, analogies, and similes. Work on your “elevator” speech to laypersons and even school age kids. Will be invaluable practice
