    I always assumed (at least in British English) it just depended whether you were borrowing from French (expresso) or Italian (espresso). I suppose Americans (less French influence) always use espresso. A bit like the British use courgette where Americans use zucchini.

    No, only in an ironic sense. We generally use "sea" where Americans use would use "ocean" unless in a geographical context. Russia was responsible for far more German casualties, (and suffered more themselves). They forgot to put that bit in Saving Private Ryan.
