Tracking long-distance movements in radio-tagged birds can be a tricky business -- but we're having success using aerial telemetry! Each flight always rewards with stunning views of the Sierra Nevada.

Got distracted by birds on the day I proposed. Who would have thought that ornithology (EEB 4260) would turn me into a birder.

Starting off the 2019 bird of the day competition right! There’s a Red-bellied Woodpecker somewhere in that fog

Bridgeport, CT. A group of Brant’s Geese on the shore. These geese are very common around here in the winter, and apparently breed in the Arctic. Not migrating as far as some seabirds, but still remarkable

Was passing through Flatbush ave (Hartford) and spotted the usual groups of Crows. I had learned through a trivia game that a group of Crows is called a "murder of crows". Why do they do this? I particularlly see this during winter szn. Are they mating? or staying warm

I was at page park in Bristol CT and watched some geese land on the frozen pond. They started eating pebbles that had been scattered on the ice. I wonder if that’s to assist with grinding food in the gizzard, which is similar to how we chew food.

Here is the White-throated Sparrow that enjoys taunting my cats (Granby, CT) Its movement seems odd, but after research I learned this species hops around and forages on the forest floor. This must be why it was eating spilled seed instead of perching in the trees.

A Carolina Wren has taken up residence in my neighbors window box! Hopefully we'll see fledging Carolina Wrens in a month or so, though it's possible we will be seeing fledging Brown Headed Cowbirds instead as those are brood parasites and also live in the area.

I went outside and surprisingly, the local Black-capped Chickadee did not make alarm calls upon seeing me. Maybe it finally realizes I'm not a threat! It even stuck around for some photos. Bonus- found a nest that had blown down, but luckily no eggs/chicks. (Granby,CT)

My constant birding has influenced my roommates I guess, because I received this picture from one of them yesterday. Apparently this male cardinal was being very noisy at 8am.

Came across these rectangular-ish holes in TriTown Forest Preserve in North Stonington, CT. I’m thinking they were made by a Pileated Woodpecker, looking for some nutritious bugs.

It's interesting to see birds living on power lines in urban environments. I know we've talked about how cats are dangerous to wild birds, and I know that powerlines are sometimes dangerous. And yet, these birds survive. Taken in Bridgeport
