(more generally…) If you're working at a startup, I can't all caps this enough: DON'T ASK FRIENDS FOR FINANCIAL ADVICE TALK TO AN ACCOUNTANT/FINANCIAL PLANNER. Your situation is not theirs and making the wrong moves with equity can have dire consequences.

I’d say do your own research unless you want to be sold an insurance policy.

Meh. Just make sure to get a fee-only financial planner that has fiduciary responsibilities. Then no need to worry about being sold an insurance policy.
