Wait, rust traits are typeclasses right? In that case I dream of the same thing, but with real inlining (in theory Scala has @ specialized, in practice it gets you a bridge method that may or may not be inlined at runtime)

Yes basically. Rust generics over traits do allow inlining. I'm specifically referring to a Rust RFC that was accepted a few years ago and is still in development.
