I know we're supposed to do feature detection, rather than version detection. In an ideal case where we did that whenever possible, what are the case where we'd still need to know the version instead? Compiler bug workarounds, occasionally? What else?

I'm unaware of a way to "feature detection" for compiler features. Maybe by trying to trigger a build with a minimal example using the feature?
