What interviewing tactics have you seen the best candidates use during interviews?

So in sum: 1. Remote work will happen, but not for you think 2. Cities have massive network effects, caused mostly by ignoring IP law 3. If you want to innovate, you practically have to be in the city!

This, by the way, is a wonderful thing for America We get to have 10, maybe 20, thriving cities with diverse firms and perspectives That means we will have more and different types of innovation! (remember, idea smooshing in new contexts = new innovation)

Many cities are benefiting from SF and NYC’s failure to scale their infrastructure People are getting priced out of the best innovation cities, but are building new ones as a result As most of the workforce piles into the business of ideas, this will only accelerate

It may not matter which city, though If most of the benefit of being in a city is from cross-firm idea exchange, then you just need to be in a city with a lot of other innovative firms I think there is many cities that have and will have the requisite density of ideas for this

So, my expectation is that jobs that are pure execution, no innovation will be allowed to go remote There’s no benefit to being packed into a city when it’s business as usual every day But in the business of new ideas, the best workers will be in a city

Going remote cuts you out of the information loop that feeds you the new, secret ideas needed to invent And it’s *insanely* hard to replicate this on the internet People are way less cavalier about what their work *actually* is like remotely. It’s hard to build the trust needed

Most innovation is the product of smooshing existing ideas together in a new context In cities, you have tremendous amounts of ideas flying around colliding with each other, and as a result you have a lot of innovation Cities are the best environment for everyday innovation

I’m convinced that cities are so productive because they are basically massive IP theft factories Otherwise proprietary info casually leaks between firms over beer and rapid job hopping But most firms are not competitive with each other, so nobody cares and everyone wins

Jargon plays a huge role in work life. People early in their career or shifting industries are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to "talking the talk." It is unrealistic to get rid of jargon. But we can help those who are just starting to build their understanding faster.

Having SQL in your toolkit is insanely good for your career and your future income. With that said, our jobs database shows 8x more jobs that want Excel experience than SQL experience. So if you're going for broad appeal, Excel is still a winner.

Even the best people get rejected during the job search process a *lot*. Companies try to minimize false positives (people they hire and have to fire). But the result is a lot of false negatives (people that would have been great and are rejected).
