How to support the mental health of musicians in 2020
Stop asking when they’re playing your town. Set up @songkick alerts instead.
If you see a nasty review, don’t tag the artist in.
If you spot a hideous comment on their post, hide it or - if appropriate - report it.

Small resolutions for music fans in 2020
Turn up early to see the support / stars of tomorrow
Be respectful. Don’t talk throughout the support or songs you don’t like (especially the quiet ones!)
Give credit wherever you can to photographers, tip-offs, meme-makers etcPrikaži ovu nit -
Things music needs in 2020
The “record” biz to find new “products”
Streaming services to introduce tip-jars.
Music biz (& media!) to move far beyond the album chart focussed release model.
More investment in behind the scenes talent i.e. managers & promoterspic.twitter.com/PT1Gr8ThmBPrikaži ovu nit -

Suggestions for media in 2020:
Spread focussed recommendations throughout the year not just AotY.
Consider repackaging clusters of recommendations by mood or genre or months or moments.
Can “we” replace the idea of “best” with “favourite” or “most popular” more often?Prikaži ovu nit -
Suggestions for music media in 2020s:
Move beyond the LP review & artist interview approach and run more around “ideas” & round-ups
Put critic’s taste/score into context

Several people asking why I’m not encouraging people to buy CDs and vinyl. I’m not discouraging it but the reality is that most people now consume music via streaming subscriptions on their phones, smart speakers and computers. It’s convenient. https://twitter.com/bpi_music/status/1212272953271955457?s=21 …https://twitter.com/bpi_music/status/1212272953271955457 …

As the record business shifts from denial to acceptance about streaming, but returns on physical product remain the dominant return on investment (recording costs, marketing, etc), we all need to consider those who aren’t feeling the benefit because they don’t operate at scale.

Vinyl for instance is growing by % but 2019’s biggest seller, Liam Gallagher, sold just 29k copies. Most acts barely sell all 500 of their minimum press run. With high cost margins many artists/labels make very little return on vinyl unless it sells out.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-50927583 …

In the “attention economy” an 8 month build up for an album release can be derailed by a surprise Kanye, Beyoncé or Radiohead LP monopolising the media space (very little is commissioned each week), and world’s attention, burying the 1000s of new releases that particular week.

For a long time with
@DrownedinSound I considered pulling up the drawbridge on covering “new” releases and covering albums 1-3 albums after release. If “we” weren’t still listening to them, are they worth the time to write about let alone creating more noise to read about them?Prikaži ovu nit -
How to support the music you love on streaming services in 2020:
Follow the act
Add tracks to your playlists
Share links to friends / your social followers
This sends signals to the algorithms they use to help filter music for wider distribution i.e. their playlistsPrikaži ovu nit -

Reminders for musicians:
You can just post once a day / week. You don’t need to be always on.
Stop repeatedly posting sales messages. Do it once. You only reach the same 1-10% of your followers.
Posting reminders is fine but try to make them “engaging”.Prikaži ovu nit -
Reminders for musicians:
Going viral is unlikely to help you find new fans. Unless it’s your music that spreads because people love it.
Leaving engaging and not-spammy comments may help you find new fans.
Starting or joining conversations is the point of social media.Prikaži ovu nit -
Marketing for musicians:
Boring sales messages are better done with adverts.
Send people to a landing page on your website that has a short intro to who you are, a sample track/video and then options to buy and stream. Plus merch and gig listings a click away.Prikaži ovu nit -
Comparisons can be helpful shorthand to intrigue people.
confession: I only listened to The National because someone described them as ‘Interpol sighing’.
The media seemed intrigued when I called @KaiserChiefs “the British Weezer” and “Dexys 2.0” https://twitter.com/snippetcuts/status/1215323371149451264?s=21 …https://twitter.com/Snippetcuts/status/1215323371149451264 …Prikaži ovu nit
