Those are both activities that cause serious, permanent physical damage to a lot of the children who participate in them, and begin before those kids are old enough to have a lasting sense of "consequences" or "forever."

I know at least one person who broke her spine in six places and will never walk again due to a bad fish dive when she was fifteen. No one said "BUT WHAT ABOUT HER SAFETY THINK OF THE CHILDREN" when the dance was choreographed.

I'm not saying "ban physical activities for kids." I'm saying "examine the prejudices that make the one choice seem scary and wrong, while the other one is normal childhood behavior."

also, pretty sure when we're talking about trans children, they're often put on puberty blockers and not straight up hormone replacement, so it's PREVENTING permanent change to their bodies.
-
That's why I was talking about puberty blockers, and not HRT.

I suppose the argument here would be that the ‘changes’ in sports are potential, not definite, and that they are incidental, not the intended result.
-
Puberty blockers cause no changes, they delay them.

I would put money on it that most of the people griping about puberty blockers wouldn't bat at eye at it being used on kids with early puberty, or at "corrective" surgeries for intersex infants
-
Every single one of the bills being considered to ban trans healthcare for minors has an exemption for surgically altering intersex kids.

I've read some terrifying articles about the injury rates of cheerleaders. It's not technically a "sport" in most high schools so doesn't have the scrutiny & recruiting that is required for sports injuries. But you have teen girls tossing each other 20 feet high.
-
We were forbidden to toss or to stack more than 2 high by Colorado HSAA rules enacted in *1985*. Being 15, we griped about it. Now I look at what kids are doing and wonder how the hell we've gone *backwards*.
