In case you haven't noticed, I am reconsidering it & apologize to all fans of graphic novels.https://twitter.com/DonnaDeCourcy/status/1316462014164860929 …

@se4realhinton Graphic novels are another form of literacy, a way of reaching more readers who go on to give characters life in the imagination on a new level. Please reconsider your dismissal of this genre. #DiversityandInclusion #openmindsopenhearts https://twitter.com/PeteDeCourcy/status/1316446610784690178 …

If “Twitter wins” means that people are exposed to other experiences and viewpoints, listen to others, and acknowledge they were wrong, then good. Hearing out other people and admitting you were wrong isn’t a bad thing.

I honestly think it is worth a go. Especially since the book is aimed at YA. Anything that gets the message to them is good. Not that GNs are only for kids, I've read plenty that are aimed at adults & only GNs. I actually saw the movie first and then read the book way back when.

The queen of YA has nothing to apologize for. It's not uncommon for people to think comics aren't literature! The more ya know! ^_^

Yeah but that doesn’t make it okay even if it isn’t “uncommon” to think that.

I think there's some great graphic novels and the medium can be used really well but I disagree with people acting like they're the same thing as actual novels, which have much more necessary descriptive prose and require more engagement and imagination on the part of the reader.

No one said they were the same, but they're great tools for helping young readers slowly work their way in and spark interest. In the more mature titles, it combines prose with the language of film and make a beautiful middleground between movies and books.

I saw you retweeted my original response! Thank you for reconsidering your POV on graphic novels, but of course you can do anything you like with your own work... it was only the stance towards them medium w/which I took issue. Thank you for this tweet.

i appreciate that you’ve taken the time to hear other voices on the matter! i’m glad that this conversation has taken place, if only to bring attention to the legitimacy of graphic novels as a medium. Thank you for being open to others and willing to reconsider!!
