No The Outsiders is the first book many people read in their life & it shows them they CAN read a book. Not that they can turn the pages on a graphic novel.https://twitter.com/ChristieDeHart/status/1316156138426114048 …

@se4realhinton Please consider writing a graphic novel version of The Outsiders. My students love your novel, and I know I could engage more readers who are reluctant and striving with a graphic novel version. Thank you for this beautiful work!

As someone who loves Graphic Novels, I can still completely understand this take. I read the Outsiders out loud in my English class in a two week period. There isn’t really a need for a Graphic novel, because the text is easy to read and the themes are rich.

Stringing together sequential images and corresponding text is actually a valuable skill. It's more than ok if graphic novels aren't your personal preference but it would be cool if we didn't label graphic novel enthusiasts as non-readers. They're reading. That's valuable.

graphic novels are books. and the outsiders is only what kids read because schools push it on kids instead of letting them read whatever they want. let's not shame folk for their reading choices and gatekeep stories.

This!! Don’t act like you’ve gotten kids to choose you over the years. Your prestige is padded by curriculum.

I guess there was no need to make a movie of it either. So lazy, just sitting there and watching.

this comment is not only rude to a perfectly lovely question, it also shows the absence of understanding what graphic novels are and how they’re not anything less than a book that tells a story with words. seems to me graphic novels where a bit to complicated for you to get?

You do not get to decide what your work does in a society- you don’t get to say “the outsiders functions as this and this alone” - once your work is out there you don’t get to tell people how to enjoy it. Do you feel this way about AUDIOBOOKS

Frankly I don't think SHE is deciding that- I think she is leaning on literal decades of data and feedback. True story- MANY MANY MANY kids over the last 30 or 40 years- The Outsiders IS the first complete book they read. It's not her deciding that.

Wow, as a librarian I have to say this statement is wrong on so many levels. Graphic novels are not a lesser form of print media, they are legitimate literature AND art.

And yet, The Outsiders is also an audiobook, a movie and is available in large print. So it's just SOME learning disabilities you're gatekeeping.

Don't forget the TV show! If we're criticising media formats that dumb down the source material...
