Graphic novels are "actual books" and do not represent the "dumbing down" of anything. They are legitimate, engaging, and complex texts in their own right.

I understand the sentiment and commend your effort to keep your art more pure in your eyes but this seems a tad more condescending towards comic authors and readers alike than you probably meant it to be. Graphic novels have kept me reading and expanding my views over the years.

I don’t think she’s diminishing the importance of Graphic Novels. She’s explaining why The Outsiders is such an important bridge into reading actual novels. Especially in Middle School/Freshmen year, it can be a crucial text that starts more reading.

My daughter is 13. The Outsiders has been her favorite book for the last year. She makes me watch the movie multiply times a week. They can still get perfectly engaged without a graphic novel.
