It bears repeating that at this point, the hardware in these phones is pretty similar. On paper, the sensor and lenses are almsot identical (I ordered a P3XL to see just how identical). Photographic leaps in quality are all software now. Exciting times.

This statement is quite inflammatory. You can't compare the smoothing that goes in on the xs, which happens in relatively well lit conditions, to this case which is basically pitch black.
-
I don't think he was being disingenuous/sarcastic with his statement, Paolo.

Total Apple Fanboy here.
Don’t care how much noise reduction is going on. I wish my new iPhone could do this. This is how I imagine Tim Cook when he see’s things like this.pic.twitter.com/Xr60PVFBMKThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Different scenarios? This is expected to be highly process. Noise reduction causes ridiculous smoothing (not just on skin; I'm not on the beautygate train) on my well-lit selfies on my XS. I love my iPhone for other reasons, but I prefer the selfies from my work Pixel 2.
-
What field of work are you in that you choose to use a pixel phone I’ve heard of using a Samsung note but never a pixel interesting

-
I don’t understand why you are surprised that people would use a pixel? that’s also my work phone, and I chose it for photography specifically

Not that I think “beautygate” was anything at all, but here the Pixel is salvaging a photo that was a throwaway. Noise reduction is fine when you get a great memory out of it where you otherwise weren’t going to get one.
-
Beautygate is very real. My XS Max takes horribly smoothed selfies in anything but ideal lighting. Currently begging that Apple changes this
-
I don’t have a XS yet, but fair enough. Didn’t realize it’s so bad. Clearly it’s not doing the same salvaging as the pixel is.

Noise reduction in VERY low light is totally different from skin smoothing even in good lighting situations.

The other picture is too dark to even tell if there was any smoothing. These are people that were hired to be part of Google's ad campaign, so obviously their faces will look good. You wouldn't have people with facial imperfections in advert showing the cameras capabilities.
