I read only a very few critics regularly. I've stuck with them for years, like a good hair stylist. That's how I recommend doing it.

For the record my favorite critics are
@astoehr,@theseantcollins,@emilyyoshida, and@draculavoice.Show this thread -
Alice is probably the single best reviewer of things neither transcendent nor dismal; she finds what's interest in any given movie, no matter how small it is, and focuses in on it like a laser beam until absolutely everything about it has been fully exposed.

Sean goes harder and puts more heart into his work than anyone I know. You can feel immediately that his deepest wish is for all art to be as great as it can be, and man it just feels like you're riding behind him on a motorcycle whenever he really rips into something.

Emily has the most impressive insight into mainstream art that I've ever encountered. Her reviews of blockbusters are staid, intelligent, and never conform to popular pressure. She reads the biggest movies in the world like she plucked them off a shelf at random.

Carmilla is so well-versed in trash and so excited about movies as a body of art; it's really refreshing to dive into her work and just see how fucking PUMPED she is about it. There's a raw energy there you won't see much of in this field.

Some of my favorite critics are people who’s taste is a different from mine but comprehensible to me and who’s perspective and prose I enjoy. I mean I’ve read all of Pauline Kael, even reviews of movies I don’t think I’ll watch.

yes! absolutely.

A really good critic is someone you enjoy reading even when they’ve got a wildly different take on something you enjoy. I often don’t agree with you, but I really like reading your thoughts on things.

yeah my response to every third email from GFM is You're Welcome! I Quite Like It! but I'm here for the challenge
