Do you ever work on car crash victims? Do you advocate for car control? Are you concerned about the availability of cars in this country? Are you mad at AAA for promoting cars?

If you want gun control then you can advocate for it. Do whatever you want. But that’s political, not medical. You don’t need an MD to support gun control, therefore you don’t get any special say in the gun control debate just because you’re a doctor.

If you write a paper about how to fix a gunshot wound then you’re definitely speaking on an MD topic. But if you write an article that says “fewer people should own guns” then you’re not speaking as an expert. You’re speaking as a citizen.

I’m a hydrologist. If I said “rainy days stink so we need more sunny days” then I wouldn’t be speaking as an expert. I would be speaking as a commoner. If I wrote an article about how rain affects a watershed, then I would be writing with expertise. Get it?
