Here's my periodic rant about why not to use Jira 🙂: Stories are not tickets. Jira is designed to track bugs. We are developing software, not tracking bugs. Jira encourages the organization to dysfunctionally look at them as such. 1/7

I've been using Jira for the last year and here it is added to my ranking of top project management tools: 1. Trello 2. Piece of paper 3. Word document shared via ftp 4. Shouting to each other over the table 5. Not tracking tasks at all 6. Jira

2/ The failure mode of engineering is perfectionism: creating elegant, performant, debt-free architectures that either take too long to build, or solve the wrong problem entirely.

I sometimes see teams and people place value on "consistency," which means do what you did before because it's what you did before. Not because it's good, but because you shouldn't do something and then not do it. It's a false virtue. It's very harmful.

I see the benefit of consistency where it makes sense. But when I argue against following such traditions I seem to come across as a cowboy who doesn't value consistency or know what patterns are. Is it just me? 6/6

wonders “why do PR comment focus on code quality rather than test quality?” When his twitter poll reveals ppl say they care more about tests? Idea: submit a PR w only tests—check those comments—and invite a teammate to make the tests pass. ?

Will developers who don't understand a practice tell their managers that the reason they go slower and create more defects is that they don't follow a practice they don't understand? Of course not. 3/n

The next best full-stack framework, compared to Rails 6, is Rails 5 😂. And the one that's going to beat Rails 6 is Rails 7 😄.

Very few framework makers believe in the values that makes Rails what it is. You cannot copy the outcome without subscribing to the value system.

Extreme Programming Explained. It changed my life by forcing me to think carefully about software development. The insight I gain from book writing is the biggest benefit. The book also introduced me to many long-term friends.
