Many historic confessions use the Apostles’ Creed as their organizing summary of “the gospel“ including articles 8-9 which say “I believe in the Holy Spirit; The holy *catholic* Church” Catholicity means not colorblind, a people gathered from every nation, tribe, & tongue.

  2. Real friendship happens when we move toward the people we are most tempted to avoid. These are the people who are best equipped to challenge our perspectives, push our buttons, and require us to put on love.

  3. The older I get, the more convinced I become that every person, without exception, is dealing with shame. It has been said, “Be kind, because everyone you meet is fighting a hidden battle.” I think that’s right.

Stop saying “I’m bad with names.” It sounds humble but it really means “You’re not important enough to remember.” Instead, try “I’m so sorry; I’ve forgotten your name. Can you remind me?” It means “I really want to know you, and I’m willing to embarrass myself till I can.”

  5. As humans, we are helplessly relational. We need connection or we will wither away.

The more biblically conservative our theology is, the more liberal we will be in how (and who) we love.

Last thought on this. I’ve heard firsthand from women who’ve been abused and trafficked (by men) into the sex and stripping trade. The pole dancing image in particular is not empowering in their story. Instead, it’s a traumatizing trigger. .

In this era where honoring women has (rightly) become paramount, how do we explain the continued, blatant objectification of women at halftime shows? And why do the women participate?

While Martha is busy trying to be LIKE Jesus, Mary spends her energy being WITH him. And in being with him, Mary becomes like him.

Love has to be a person to us before it can become a verb. Jesus is that Person.

Traditionalists fear getting too “close to the line” of biblically-sanctioned freedom. Modernists resent any “line” that calls for biblically-shaped ethics. Faithfulness on both counts is to live ON the line versus avoiding the line.
