Something I don't see discussed often of is that if we are to survive the next half-century, we have to move away from a paradigm of permanent economic growth. Infinite profits are impossible on a finite planet. If we are to stop killing ourselves, we have to stop working.

Automation aside, a huge number of the jobs we do in order to justify existing (because we set the system up so that if you don't generate profit for someone, you die) are jobs that don't need doing and in fact, the world would be better off without.

So you're suggesting that being forced to engage with the most depressing, oppressive, painful, burdensome, stressful, and humiliating aspects of our lives somehow makes us less free? I like the cut of your jib,

Who does the work which is going to be exchanged for UBI dollars which didn’t produce labor? “Money” is an exchange medium for “labor”. Who does the labor that can’t just be ignored? I happen to enjoy what I get paid money to do, so in Star Trek Universe, I’d be happy w/ no $$.
-
Who does the labor? The people who get paid enough to do it. If the price they demand is higher than the price of automation, technology does that work. If technology can't do the work, and you can't afford to pay someone to do that work, then we'll do it ourselves, like chores.

You just bend the very concept of freedom. What you call free people would actually be the well fed slaves of an omnipotent state. Of course most people would not work. Nor innovate, study or start any kind of enterprise. Why? For lack of INCENTIVES, which drive most individuals.
-
You show a poor understanding of the disincentives created by conditional welfare states as well as what drives people. You also appear to believe every senior with a pension and every resident of a Alaska is a well-fed slave, which is verifiable nonsense.https://medium.com/basic-income/what-people-get-most-wrong-about-unconditional-basic-income-ubi-b571af99c50c …
