"my conversations with him in recent days made it clear that he genuinely believed the things he said and wrote, which is bad" really says something about what sort of Thinkers Jeffrey Goldberg's Atlantic is looking for

Mike Royko's column following MLK assassination: "He wanted only that black Americans have their constitutional rights, that they get an equal shot at this country's benefits, the same thing we give to the last guy who jumped off the boat. So we killed him."

Your occasional reminder that a large number of Very rich People believe the ideal model of society is the Company Town, and are going to work very hard to put us back in them.

PHANTOM DETECTIVE magazine, June 1937. This killer ventriloquism-themed cover is some next-level stuff. I can't identify the cover artist. Anyone out there in internetland got a clue?

Our countdown continues! Also in equal 4th is... ..."In the Stacks" by ! With a full-cast ensemble of 13 readers over 90 minutes, it's still one of the grandest undertakings we've, uh, undertaken. Rated R; be careful!

THE CYCLE OF WISDOM Me, age 8: Yay, the Beach Boys! I like them, my dad listens to them a lot. Me, age 20: Oh god the Beach Boys. Daddest of the dad music. Kill me. Me, age 35+: Holy shit the Beach Boys were musical geniuses. I should give dad the antidote for his slow poison.

Okay, so you made a film called "Sherlock Gnomes" and I do understand that it was always going to be ass-tastic but now I find out you didn't even have the GODDAMN DECENCY to seize your one opportunity to name the villain "Lessiarty."

The problem isn’t just the President is a bigot and his party are cowardly enablers, he also doesn’t even understand the basics of the policy he’s fucking up. You had to be in the US by 2007 to be eligible for DACA. New immigrants couldn’t be eligible.

In 2002 I joked about licensing a Captain & Tenneile roleplaying game and several people took it seriously, ffs. Since then I've been iffy on the whole concept.

I decided a year or two ago to never again do an April Fool's joke in public. The concept of truth on social media is already fragile, and I no longer derive any sense of amusement from adding more noise to the signal.
