If I recall correctly, PTA is a big fan of mainstream, blockbuster films but says he wouldn't know how to make one. So, he makes what he knows. And, Nolan is a big fan of Michael Bay.
Director’s advice: what you love as a film viewer and what you’re good at making are likely two different things. It’s important to make this distinction. Don’t make what you most admire, make what’s in you — especially when wrestling earnestly and honestly with yourself.
