You know that iconic scene, at the end of The Matrix when Neo suddenly “gets it” and picks bullets out of thin air as if they are cute and curious little things? Been thinking: what’s the equivalent of “seeing the matrix” for product leaders? 10+ Realizations that come to mind:

so many reasons why copywriters and designers should be on the same team; all critical drivers of user experience that should be made & iterated in tandem. This is a collapse of the stack that startups enjoy and then undo as the grow. And most big companies just don’t get it…

if there’s any question about twitter being the world’s source / programmer of news… when someone captures something newsworthy, look how fast the major news outlets request permission.

caught up with Gabe at HQ today and came across this performance art gem - ATM that displays account balance w/ a pic on a leaderboard (sold to collector at Basel for $$$, of course). art is intrigue is art. and is my favorite art-first brand.

new analysis published today, examining implications of: (1) how brands (co's & ppl) start + monetize, (2) how old brands are navigating new tech, (3) how small brands are sharing data/cooperating to compete, (4) and how brands market in real-time & leverage old-school channels💥

trying to express the new "Implications" monthly analysis/newsletter....graphically. the ripples represent the implications of advances in tech, shifts in culture, and evolution in the art and science of product design and building teams as for the diamonds, that's up to you ;-)

Really sums up 90%+ of what i’m seeing. Winners will either (1) build proprietary datasets/models that differentiate outcomes, (2) leverage this/other network effects, (3) integrate as preferred partners in existing products. …Or have the customers & established GTM advantages.

little segment on the “content authenticity initiative” which now includes hundreds of partners - and can help us (1) determine how content was made/edited and by who, and (2) whether it was made by human or AI.

“feels like a cheat code” - feedback on last Implications edition from a founder I support. makes sunday AM writing sessions worth it. if you’re a seed investor, highly recommend sending a monthly synthesis of insights/analysis to founders (you can also invite others to sign up!)

+1! 💥 Nicole and the team are illuminating and radically simplifying the back-and-forth of lab results (doctors ordering and explaining, patients understanding) - empowers both patients and doctors.

Congratulations Nicole and the @WeareElaborate team!!! Its been a joy getting to watch you guys build so much so quickly. This is a step function improvement for independent physicians and consumers. fastcompany.com/90839882/elabo

a company's values should be a mix of what you aspire to be and what makes you special, they should become part of the daily vernacular, and they should advance your mission. in this sense, proud of the new values our team developed and rolled out today...

thinking: showing hands in virtual meetings will become a universal sign of respect - it means you are paying attention (vs. using your computer) and it means you aren’t generated by AI (you don’t have 8 fingers or 3 thumbs).

good little excerpt in this #TheMessyMiddle chapter about in the final mile of her business, negotiating an acquisition while dealing with her board and normal operations while also about to go into labor. there is always a path, just gotta DYFJ.

Reading The Messy Middle by @scottbelsky and it’s almost impossible to get through a chapter without wanting to distill and implement the learnings. So many great nuggets about the journey in here. Highly recommend. DYFJ!

Explored these and a few more things I expect to see in the last edition of Implications, aptly titled “A Chat With Dead Legends & 3 Forecasts: The Return of Socratic Method, Assertive Falsehoods, & What's Investable?” 🤓

Open source standards for opt-out of AI-training will emerge. I expect to see: (1) More paywalls, token gates, and walled “no scrape” gardens favored by content creators. (2) widely respected “watermarks” in GenAI text / images (models need to avoid self-training w/ falsehoods)

Next edition of Implications will be forecasts all about BRANDS. …where next gen brands are brewing, how they are navigating physical vs. digital, new methods of customer acquisition, surprising ways they are monetizing, and more. been fun. writing truly helps understanding.

convinced: great product leaders rotate between cycles of obsessing over customers you have and customers you don't have. doing both is critical, but hard simultaneously.

people will keep wondering until they know, and people will get lost without context. in-app messaging, breadcrumbs, and expectation management is an underestimated art/science of product development.

as web apps proliferate, cool way to build your own cross-app dashboards by taking a "live snapshot" of any website and embedding them together...

positive engagement with criticism is a great filter for those who will be able to welcome tough news, engage with disagreement, and overcome inevitable adversity in the journey. for early stage investors: poking holes in pitches and plans is a great litmus test for readiness…

as a founder, you can know every function of a company, hire all the right people, nail strategy day one, and have all the right instincts on product… OR you can over-compensate w/ a LOT of hours (reality). “Hustle” is throwing time at everything you don’t know or get wrong.

getting attention distracts you from doing things that merit attention. the allure of critics and accolades, likely the cause of most one-hit wonders, functions as society’s immune system against continued ingenuity. always admired those who transcend (find hacks to not care).
