Best three step process I’ve found to making an impact as an engineer. 1) Find a big, complex problem in your area that’s high value but challenging. 2) Live and breathe the problem until you see “obvious” next steps to address it. 3) Do those next steps. Rinse and repeat.

Increment (and its editors and ) is an awesome publication to work with and I highly encourage you to read a few and submit your own writing for future issues. I don't have any secret in, but I'd be happy to read and give feedback on any proposals!

Systematize it, to the extent possible: get very clear on expectations up front; establish trusted-but-frank external feedback loops; regularly do critical self-review of your own work; get comfortable asking for help and accept that you fail sometimes on the path.

I like this advice, or ’s similar “have almost too much self belief”, but I’m also aware of Dunning-Kruger and know of incompetent people in power through bravado and false confidence. How do you balance this while still claiming challenging opportunities for yourself?

Seeing uses for this pattern everywhere now that I have a name for it. Solve big problems cohesively but iteratively with Roofshots . Odds are you’ll be more successful, and it certainly derisks the effort organizationally.

Here's quick list of resources that have helped me over the last few months, it's rough + certainly incomplete: … I'm working on a blogpost intro to negative emissions -- this list is one piece, sharing now in case it's useful!

has anyone written about strategy or expectations for engineers who are joining a new company at staff/principal level and what they should be doing in their first few months?

In this spirit, if you know of a person/conference/podcast/blog that cares about IC leadership/career topics specifically, I’d love to hear about it. Hoping to find ways in 2020 to both get more involved myself and meet others doing the same.

I have had a goal of writing up my own experience so far. Something in the vein of “lessons learned on the way to staff engineer”. Tons of overlap with observations in this article. Amazing this is equally present for designers as IC engineers.

And in confs/blogs/podcasts, leadership is often nearly synonymous with management. I admire and Rands Leadership Slack for trying to change this, but even in those spaces the weight of attendance and voices can still feel slanted.

If your ICs aren’t given a seat at the table for strategy setting meetings, it’s no wonder they aren’t showing group-wide impact. If they’re never presenting to execs of course they look less polished than your one-year-our-of-Stanford PM. Opportunity is king!

Look at # of engineers at the top of your IC ladder — is it effectively empty? Compare that to the top of your manager ladder. Are you minting VPs and directors constantly but waiting for an industry-impacting Jeff Dean figure you fill your top IC tier?

Ever seen a team/org where all the most critical technical decisions are made by managers or PMs? Do the major strategy setting meetings include any ICs? Do presentations to execs? Do your staff meetings? If not, how do you expect them to make wise tech+biz decisions?

On a more helpful note, in my own limited experience the only way to defend your *own* career against these forces is relentless, continuous self advocacy. The default outcome for ICs is unfortunately not leadership and impact.
