Seen a lot about him handling the hate with quiet grace but I recall that for decades after whenever he mentioned the mail (or pushed for minority representation in front offices) old guard sportswriters tagged him as "bitter." As always, any protest was too much for those dudes.

America is also the 53,775 fans who crowded the stadium that night in Atlanta (a sellout) and booed when Aaron got walked in his 1st AB, and booed again when he got a 1st pitch ball in his 2nd AB b/c they wanted to see him break the record.

I was around 10 yo when Aaron hit #715. I remember watching it and cheering madly; Aaron was one of my childhood heroes. I only learned of what he had to endure years later - and still, he chose not to back down. Which is why he's still one of my heroes.
