Heartbreaking quote in the @nytimes Hank Aaron obit, excerpted from a feature on him in 1994. On what chasing the home run record meant for him. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/sports/baseball/hank-aaron-dead.html …pic.twitter.com/3V1rcBqLOu

Seen a lot about him handling the hate with quiet grace but I recall that for decades after whenever he mentioned the mail (or pushed for minority representation in front offices) old guard sportswriters tagged him as "bitter." As always, any protest was too much for those dudes.

Bet that word was also thrown around about this quote in '94.

I’m sure he was frightened when two fans ran on the field when he broke the record, thankfully they congratulated by patting him on the shoulder

America is also the 53,775 fans who crowded the stadium that night in Atlanta (a sellout) and booed when Aaron got walked in his 1st AB, and booed again when he got a 1st pitch ball in his 2nd AB b/c they wanted to see him break the record.

I was around 10 yo when Aaron hit #715. I remember watching it and cheering madly; Aaron was one of my childhood heroes. I only learned of what he had to endure years later - and still, he chose not to back down. Which is why he's still one of my heroes.

When people say sports and politics shouldn't mix, I always point to Hank Aaron as an example of how sports have always been political

The only people surprised by the history & depth of American racism & the current increase in its open practice have paid too little attention--either inadvertently or willfully. We need a *serious redesign of our K-12/16 curricula, notably in History, English, & Economics../1
