This is a reminder that I occasionally take commissions for interesting projects. If you have a piece of sociotechnology you want narratively exploded, a weird project needing scoping from every angle, or anything else for which you think I'd be uniquely helpful, send me a DM.

A friend is getting targeted ads regarding a health crisis they are going through. It causes distress every time they encounter one. I know how to fix it, but they didn't. Just adding another anecdote of how powerless most are in the face of an often harmful digital world.

Nature article comparing rates and patterns of cultural change to biological evolution. There are reasons to be wary, starting with the assumption that LDA topics are cultural "traits." But the conclusions are still intriguing.

It's frustrating and sad that this project - the Coronavirus Papers - has to operate illegally:

Lorraine Daston, generally being awesome—and reminding us that the social walls we've built between "qualitative" and "quantitative" inquiry are arbitrary and odd.

After 15 years I'm planning on taking down . Why? 1. Cost of web hosting. 2. Unable to update/maintain. There is however: 1. The book (with some but not all projects). 2. Wayback Machine (with some but not all pages).

Using NYT book reviews, Lavin demonstrates that "summary-driven book reviews played an important role in gendering reviewed authors, partly by gendering subject matter and genre norms, and partly by gendering the work of mediating taste and distinction."

This would be a useful report to assign on your syllabuses, fellow people who teach about interactions between predictive algorithmic systems and society.

(I hate to rain on our library parade, but it feels like now more than ever we must take care to counteract the spread of pleasing, untrue narratives, since that's what many of us are trying to curb more broadly. When they reinforce our hopes is when we most must be on guard.)

I realize everyone's thrilled by the "more people go to libraries than the movies" report, but the data show the reverse. What's happening is that the people who visit libraries (a minority) go *often*, but movie-goers go to the theatre less frequently.

My living grandmother was 27 and living in New York when this photo was taken. Had her parents stayed in Warsaw, she would have suffered the same brutal fate as Istvan and many of her relatives who never left.

Thanks for everyone who's been checking in. Apparently concussions take a long time to recover from! I'm doing well, but I've gone back to very limited screen and thinking time to speed things up. It's stunningly boring. Anyone have easy, concussion-friendly hobby suggestions?
