The RVO was invented by Queen Victoria in 1896 to allow her to personally thank and honour people who had helped her directly, or represented her across the Empire. The Queen appointed Prince Philip as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO).
The Maltese cross (see pic) is the symbol of the Royal Victoria Order and there are different sizes depending on which of the five rankings the holder is at — with the GCVO being the biggest of them all. Prince Harry was made a Knight Commander of the RVO (KCVO) in 2015.pic.twitter.com/7A7iJW5Y4m
