This woman is beyond contempt. David Leakey couldn’t possible be bullied because he’s a privileged white male?

Turning Karl Marx back on himself, socialism really is the opium of the people. Superficially attractive, but utterly destructive. I always viewed Ayn Rand’s Atlas SHrugged as Reductio Ad Absurdum - but nearer than i sver imagined possible

There is much to dislike about - but listening to his speech, the contrast between a successful US and a sclerotic is thrown into sharp relief: American culture has never been posioned by socialism

The #1 cause of startup death is making something no one wants. The #2 cause is spending too much. Those two account for so many deaths that I'm not even sure what #3 is. If you merely make something people want and don't spend too much, you're way ahead.

It’s interesting that people think it’s unreasonable if don’t to offer a vegan menu choice - why is it acceptable not to have a NON-vegan choice? I’m an obligate meat eater!

And then, when you have read that, read this piece on False Discovery Rates if you havent already: - because even with a correct definition p values can be exceptionally misleading in real-world use when testing many hypotheses

This thread is worth a read if you work in clinical trials (or any other branch of science) and feel at all hazy aboiut what the p value tells you. Your life’s work depends on interpreting them correctly, so you better be ABSOLUTELY clear what it means!

Because “activity in a subset” is not activity unless the trial was designed to look for that. This fundamental misunderstanding of statistics lies at the heart of the debate

“I am not able to arrange any divestment at short notice. But I can arrange for the gas central heating in college to be switched off,” St John’s College principal bursar Adrew Parker tells students demanding divestment from oil companies.

Really cool paper from the labs of Simon Cook, Nicholas Ktistakis and Oliver Florey about the regulation of in mitotic cells. See comment below for a link to my recommendation.

For a century before social media arguments were built principally around the “facts”. Today, arguments are built around convenient claims that are not immediately disprovable

The rise of the grey zone of truth: what social media has done in the last decade is move the national debate firmly into the grey zoen - about things that are neithe provably true or clearly falsifiable

When I write this piece in 2015 (“DMD Drugs: An Existential Crisis for FDA?” it was exactly the current situation - with endless approved cancer drugs that dont work and the possibility of an aducanumab approval - that I was envisaging

Or put that another way: does making money trump doing good (again)? If we answer yes, maybe we can see why the public has lost faith in pharma - even if they don’t understand the details of what is going on here

Raises question: if manage to get aducanumab approved despite it not working, does that mean management were smart to keep going (rather than dumb, as I have suggested previously)?

I think the FDA is in danger of losing the plot entirely. Which is why I think they might actually approve aducanumab
