  3. Blackwell returned to England in 1869 & together with Florence Nightingale opened the Women’s Medical College. From 1872 she taught at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson’s New Hospital for Women & helped establish the London School of Medicine for Women in 1874.

  4. After moving to the US, Blackwell took up teaching in order to pay for medical school & in 1849 graduated top of her class. But, still unable to get a post in American hospitals, Blackwell, her sister Emily & friend Dr Marie Zakrzewska started their own hospital in New York.

  5. Happy Birthday Elizabeth Blackwell, physician born in Bristol in 1821. A pioneer in women’s medical education, Blackwell was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the US & one of the first women on the UK Medical Register.

    1879 Newcastle's Mosley Street was the first street to be lit by Joseph Swan's incandescent light bulbs 💡💡💡 This Edison Swan 1900 light bulb used to be installed at 💡 It's 'dark side' enabled it to be dimmed 💡💡

  15. This is a pewter bleeding bowl used during bloodletting - a practice once used to treat medical diseases thought to be caused by excess blood in the body. Engraved inside is a scale to record how much blood was taken 💉

  16. Another in our collection is this engraved divination bowl from 19th century Persia or Palestine. It was used to try to determine causes and treatments for illnesses eg. by interpreting the reflection of light on the bowl’s sides
