A must read for anyone in publishing (and particularly for those crafting new policies and mandates): Reality has a surprising amount of detail "The more difficult your mission, the more details there will be that are critical to understand for success."

All journalists should be skeptical. On a science beat that applies to conference talks, journal papers, and preprints. But few journalists have the background to do this confidently, hence uncritical reporting. Reminders like ours may help a bit but don’t sub for good practice

It’s not hard to ingest a gushing river of news — much of it sad, scary, or far away — & tune out, seeking distraction, or lapse into apathy. But humans make progress helping one another every day, & change lives & have a positive impact on our world as a result. Don’t lose hope!

If I were to ask you: what is 6% of 33? How many of you would immediately say: “well, it’s the same as 33% of 6, which is 2 (one third of 6)” ? It’s insane that such an obvious and simple bit of maths is so little known - as in, IT HAD NEVER OCCURRED TO ME, EITHER!

Always worth looking at long-term trends before buying into vinyl resurgence stories. Yes, there is a hardcore keen to buy records. But it’s still little more than a tiny bump. And as for tapes…

(I’m a screener) There are bad science preprints (and “peer reviewed” papers too). Most are ultimately easily corrected by science over time. The challenge with this one is rapid nature of publication coupled with frenzy of am outbreak. There’s a middle ground somewhere

I appreciate this note but what we also need to recognize is that for those who are using these preprints for conspiracy ... this is seen as just more evidence of a cover up.

Earlier this week, folks celebrated that coronavirus papers were popping up in preprint servers. Now there is a reminder not to use them to guide clinical practice because they haven’t been reviewed. Journals ARE reviewing coronavirus papers and getting the pub’d quickly.

Yeah - a registration and restriction system with terms of use certainly does solve it. Buts that's contrary to the aims of these things.
