Ultra Low Emissions Zone. Promising climate policy for dense, transit accessible cities.
Quote Tweet
Just 6 months in, London's ULEZ has achieved a 4% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 3-9% reduction in traffic flows. This is above and beyond the impacts of the congestion charge already realised. london.gov.uk/sites/default/

What are your thoughts on high acceleration, heavy electric SUVs/pickups. Will they skirt into these ulevs and mitigate the safety benefit?

they are getting low emission zones in three or four English cities too. rules and prices vary. I don’t think they will ban suv’s tho. It depends on their engines.

If only that were so. The ULEZ doesn't look at total emissions, only whether it meets EURO 4 standards: "Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001"

Skeptical - basically the impact of the ULEZ is on older vehicles, not bigger ones. In the US in particular trucks and SUVs account for a growing share of new vehicles, and a ULEZ doesn't address that. The question is whether it takes vehicles off the road...

Love the thought but not sure this is the solution, at least as currently defined in London. Just bans older vehicles that pollute more, not larger ones.
