So is your position that pedestrians should be legally able to cross the street at any place, at any speed, and with any level of car traffic?

I think if you're driving in a city, the legal and moral onus is on you to look out for and avoid pedestrians, not the other way around. And I think in a healthy ped-friendly city jaywalking is a fact of life.

I suspect that what drivers see as "oblivious" walking is often an aware pedestrian legally claiming right-of-way

I have been shouted at and told that I need to stop and wait when a car is coming, in a crosswalk. People are completely incompetent at driving.

@manolistrecker @midtown_bike Disambiguation required for this confused thread. True, pedestrians no threat to motorists. True, onus for awareness falls upon driver - always. This not relevant to need for pedestrians to be aware/responsible & not walk out in path of oncoming car -
For their own safety, Pedestrians must behave predictably. Altho statistically MUCH less likely 2b a problem than driver, there can be no argument against added margin of safety, however small, in traffic-dense situations.
