A moderate almost won the NYC mayoral election by stressing competence, efficiency, and high-quality public services. The left should adapt that message and make it their own — and they have a historical model for how to do it. Me, in :

Also, deep admiration for his decision to discuss his struggles with depression so honestly and publicly, something I have tried & failed to do throughout my life.

Heard this news from friends & had to break Twitter sabbatical for Bonin, one of the most principled electeds I've ever seen. He's stood up unapologetically to NIMBYism, car culture, and anti-homeless bigotry, at great personal & professional risk. A huge loss for the City of LA.

Went for a hike yesterday in Fahnestock State Park, up in the Hudson Highlands near Cold Spring. Cold but sunny. Juniper the Arctic Explorer had a blast

Both related to my career field! I really do feel like I used to get great professional information & connections from being here and it feels like everything has stagnated and all our discussions have become so stale.

After a conversation I had with my therapist I've been thinking about seriously curtailing my time on this site, but between an absolutely cursed thread I saw yesterday and an extremely stupid culture war dust-up I saw today, I really think I might just go cold turkey

I'm working on a story about how larger American trucks and SUVs are leading to increased pedestrian death rates. My main character interview fell through, and I'm looking for someone who's had a pedestrian interaction with one of these big boys. Little help?

I'll always admire Dan Bejar for the time several years ago that he did an interview where he was like "My daughter loves Taylor Swift but I don't get it at all" and set off a whole Discourse Cycle, taking the heat for all insufferable and unreconstructed rockists out there

Missed that we've got a new Destroyer single. Verbose cryptic lyrics that can't stick to a meter? Check. Jazz horns? Check. "Ba dum dum de dum"s? Check. Bejar Hive Rise Up

Massachusetts is really doing this. Boston suburbs must zone for multifamily housing this year or forfeit state grants.

I shared this thought with a friend privately who then told me I had to tweet it, so don't blame me, I'm just following orders

Just had an absolutely cursed thought, which is that if "RENT" were set in 2022, all the main characters except Joanne would be heavily involved in the effort to prevent Elizabeth Street Garden from being converted into low-income senior housing

I think every leftist should pass this around once or twice a year just so we're all on the same page: from recently WW-II era CIA "Simple Sabotage Field Manual", guidelines for how to disrupt organizations.

The fact that IBX is going to be the biggest addition to the Subway since *WWII* sort of gives the game away here. Mexico City and Sao Paulo have built entire systems since 1968, to say nothing of China or legacy Euro systems that have doubled or tripled in size since then

Look, I love the NYC transit system more than anything and I understand politicians are gonna do a certain degree of boosterism, but this is just not true. Best in US? Definitely. We're #1 or #2 in the Americas. But there are so many ways we could be better

I don't yet have a sense of how Hochul came to the IBX as her signature proposal, but it's instructive to see her take something wonks had been proposing and make it her own vs. how Cuomo would shove his ideas down everyone's throats instead.
