Wild that we're still seeing a narrative of rubber bullets being safe when they've repeatedly been shown to cause serious injuries, such as permanently blinding people, and even deaths. 'Rubber bullets are safe' is propaganda, don't fall for it.https://twitter.com/Quiara/status/1266815083981803525 …

Linda lost all the use of her left eye to white supremacist police today. As a photographer, that’s huge, and she may need further surgery. She is permanently blind in that eye due to the impact of a rubber bullet clearly aimed at protestor’s heads. If you can pitch in, please do https://twitter.com/KillerMartinis/status/1265666923024592897 …

This is not new information. From Chile and Hong Kong last year, we have plenty of stories of police deliberately aiming at eyes to blind people with rubber bullets, using the defence that they were 'using non-lethal force'. They know what they're doinghttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/19/world/americas/chile-protests-eye-injuries.html …

Again, stop believing that rubber bullets are safe and responsible. It's a useful pretence, but it is a pretence.https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/dec/19/rubber-and-plastic-bullets-too-dangerous-for-crowd-control-says-study …

Yeah, what's their kinetic energy? I bet it's a _lot_ more than airsoft or paintball where use of eye protection is mandatory.

They're far more potent and aren't even solid rubber but metal slugs coated in rubber.

You see them described as "non-lethal" in discussions where all participants know that "safe!" is bullshit, and also know that everyone else knows this, too. "less lethal" is more appropriate, but of course this is more detrimental to the narrative of the "safe!" proponents.

I saw somewhere that they’re designed to be ricocheted off the ground, but the police have been deliberately firing direct shots in order to maim people.

I question whether even that notion is credible. Shooting that way would reduce the kinetic force some, but I don't think it's plausible that there is even an attempt to teach anyone to use them that way, or that the technique figured heavily in any design or marketing.

They're more dangerous than bean bags and bean bags have been largely phased out due to broken ribs and internal decapitations.
