  10. Thinking about the overlap between overt and covert propaganda strategies also matters for the ongoing . In many instances, these outlets have much more reach than fake accounts and covert info ops working to sow discord and spread

  11. Overall, coverage protests by 🇷🇺 state-backed media build upon racism and anti-Western frames characteristic of traditional propaganda strategies, but with new digital tools and contemporary clickbait content to appeal to distinct audiences on the left and right.

  12. In contrast, the newer and smaller properties had a left-leaning audience focus and inflected their racism-focused content along that editorial alignment: pro-protestors, pro-BLM, anti-police.

  14. With the rise of 'grey' media channels with obscured ties back to 🇷🇺, overt propaganda strategies have started to reflect covert strategies. Particularly, outlets would ‘play both sides’, covering the same events but diverging in their audience positioning and framing

  15. Just like in the past, 🇷🇺state-backed media amplified real incidents of racism, using them in an effort to undermine US moral standing and position in global leadership. But in today’s digital ecosystem, propaganda posters have become memes and broadcasts have become livestreams.

  16. , and I looked at how Russian state-backed media covered the protests over summer 2020 on FB. We looked at traditional broadcasters (like RT) but also at newer media properties that have emerged over the past 5 yrs & how they differed in their coverage.
