In Jan 2018, I set goal to email someone 1x a week to tell them how I liked a book or article. I sent my 100th note today. It is one of my favorite things. Next time you read something interesting, useful, or thought-provoking, why not tell the author?

Okay, I'm going to stir the pot a bit: UX design is a skill, not a role, not a department, not a team. Our goal is to produce and deliver software, not to design it. We can design 'till we're green, but if we don't build, we have nothing. 1/5

Hey public sector: don't get dependent on big contracts with private tech companies with big connections to do public work.

(True, the caucuses are not government and its software is not government software, but it’s a timely example and also this is a distinction that’s basically lost on the general public.)

Now the narrative is that the Iowa caucuses are broken. (Which, I mean, they *are*, but not in the ways that this narrative is about.) Apple, Microsoft, and Google have taught people to have suitably high expectations for tech. Government can and must meet these standards.

Did the Iowa caucuses work, in terms of doing the thing that the Iowa Democratic Party intended them to do? Looks like it! But it doesn’t matter because the tech was broken. It would have worked way better with a phone bank and results called in — old-school tech.

Public faith in government has eroded in the US, in part because we have a political party that is premised on the idea that all government is bad, but in part it’s because the tech intermediation is ancient and broken. We need to fix that software for gov’t to work for people.

Many public interactions with government are intermediated by software, either directly (renewing your driver’s license online) or indirectly (the software used by Medicaid call center workers). That software is usually bad or broken. This leads people to believe gov’t is broken.

A fantastic thread about the foundation of the app situation. Many of us have been yammering on about the issues w/the product, but of course... the *real* problems are systemic. The tech itself is rarely the problem—it’s largely people, process & policy.

There is a very relatable and easily accessible case study here on the need for good design, thorough user testing, and investing in in-house tech talent for the next President of the United States. This should be in the Day 1 briefing materials.

This thread. I agree. One of the pillars of our approaches has to be starting at the university level. HMW use a multidisciplinary approach to creating new public servants that understand and champion Internet-era approaches to policy making!

This. And assuming that the policy tradition in gov won't change quickly (or ever, given sticky legacies), then this is where we start to the very real limits of "digital transformation". It's also why people in my world need to rethink what they teach future policy analysts.

Just FYI for those of you who don’t work in government technology: The Census has seriously fucked up its software development, wouldn’t let anyone help fix it (we tried!),and is likely going to fail to get an accurate count of the population, forcing us to reuse 2010 numbers.
