"your own life will have been a minuscule little flicker of near-nothingness in the scheme of things: the merest pinpoint, with two incomprehensibly vast tracts of times, the past and future of the cosmos as a whole, stretching off into the distance on either side."

That may be true, but people should not forget they the people around them indeed do care. The universe is an abstraction that distracts good people from the simple truth that their lives are defined by whether they have a positive impact on their friends and family.

Oliver Burkeman proposes "cosmic insignificance therapy": ""When things all seem too much, what better solace than a reminder that they are, provided you're willing to zoom out a bit, indistinguishable from nothing at all."

While it’s true we are insignificant to the cosmos, we are people (at least for now) and we’d be wise to have some intentionality in the structure of our lives. The universe doesn’t care about meaning but someone living with the results of choices values what they do with time.
-
As I understand it, Burkeman is right there with you. He’s saying we can never do everything so let most of it go and do what truly matters to you

Carl Sagan had a good answer to this. After spending 5 chapters of Pale Blue Dot establishing our insignificance, he opened the next with, "If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves find a worthy goal."

The empty comfort that nothing matters at all to the infinite universe yields more nihilism, more sleeping populations disengaged from the world that they very well might change.
-
Must it lead to nihilism though? I don't think it must. I know what
@oliverburkeman is saying. It can lead to better use of our time to pursue meaningful pursuits and not sweat the small stuff. So I disagree with you. - Näytä vastaukset
