But it seems as if whatever she did, he'd be doomed. If she said nothing, he could end up dead someday and she'd never forgive herself for not reporting what he wrote and trying to help. Even if her help inadvertently made things worse.

There are lots of things a teacher can do to support a student in thus case that doesn't involve snitching. You don't know? Former gang members make the best community organizers, and the best mentors.

In any case, doing nothing is better than turning a vulnerable student over to the authorities. There is no scenario where that turns out well. People who are serving the public should know that.

Maybe, but at the same time you have to wrestle with the morality of not saying anything about someone who has witnessed crimes. I would not want to be in her place.

The law doesn't dictate morality. Snitching is immoral. Deportation is immoral.

I don't think the solution here is very simple and that it is to keep quiet. I'm not sure what the solution is. And I said as much.

Scroll up, KEEP QUIET is not the recommendation. You're ignoring solutions that inconvenience you. Good thing you're not a teacher.

Your suggestion seems to be that the teacher do other things but also, at the same time, keep quiet. How can you say I'm ignoring solutions when I've been having this conversation and thinking about this?

That being said, I am glad I work with preschoolers and not the kind of students I'd have to worry about having told me these kinds of things. And that's where I am going to leave it.

You don't think preschoolers are exposed to crime and violence? And you're really committed to framing this situation in terms of how ot affects your career, your moral compass, your feelings. It's really a shame. I have a lot of respect for educators, we can do better!
