I suspect many liberals fear nuclear war because they imagine it's the only kind of warfare that might actually affect them.. as opposed to the decades of ongoing wars across the globe, instigated by the United States, that have already obliterated millions of civilians.

The more hawkish wing of Democrats supported numerous overseas interventions which put both American soldiers and civilians in danger. In addition, they supported drone strikes despite their horrific collateral damage. Not all liberals, but certainly a defined group.
