RE #CodeBlue & calling 311 for homeless people out in the cold: you absolutely should not do that without the express consent of the person.
The teams that respond work with NYPD. You are calling police, just ask first. Hypothermia can injure or kill people, so can police.

New York City 311Verified account @nyc311Replying to @latesummerteaThank you for bringing this to our attention. Due to extreme cold weather, Code Blue procedures are in effect until 8 AM. Call 911 to request assistance for a homeless person. Please see this link for further clarity http://on.nyc.gov/2ezQekp1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
It's not always a friendly outreach team. In extreme cold 311 callers are reporting being routed to 911 automatically, which means a random cop car.

Here's your inconvenient weekly reminder that not one cop has been trained in implicit bias since Eric Garner was brutally murdered on camera in 2014.https://twitter.com/Newsweek/status/946835739819552769 …

I guess this needs to be said. We all want to do our part and help out. It's not about our feelings, we need to consider the impact of our well intended actions. Just ask before you make a call. We can help AND let people decide for themselves.

Our individual feelings about individual cops are irrelevant. Data and lived experience both point to the fact that police misconduct is routine. It puts people in danger, especially those who have been marginalized, like our chronically homeless neighbors.

And this "don't talk to homeless people" approach falsely implies that they are somehow dangerous or criminal by virtue of being homeless. That is not the case. If you're uncomfortable asking for consent, get uncomfortable or walk away. #harmreduction
