South Brooklyn DSA added,
Although it would be nice/ideal, not everyone wants to or will speak with someone on the street. If you can & are familiar with resources, great. Otherwise, outreach teams & Police can offer to take one to shelter and are not there to do harm. Be productive, not divisive.
It's not divisive to state the facts. It's no secret that police often do more harm than good. Same goes for shelters. Let's offer the resources we are able, AND have a little respect for houseless NYers to let them make their own choice.
"Police often do more harm than good" is an opinionated statement - not one of fact. That there are bad apples out there does not speak for the many fine police who perform their job with compassion. I respect what you're saying in that we should respect everyone's rights...
It's a widely held opinion because it is backed by lived experience and data. I'm not here to debate the personal character of individual cops. Police misconduct is a systemic issue and a constant danger for our most marginalized neighbors. "A few bad apples" c'mon now
It sure sounded like a generalization. Thanks for your input. Keep warm!
Thanks, you too. One final thought - as someone who has good experiences communicating with houseless folks about their experiences, maybe you can encourage others to do the same.
