#CodeBlue... Call 911 if you observe any homeless or at-risk individual so that an outreach team can bring them to shelter.pic.twitter.com/Y7s7lLLeBc

RE #CodeBlue & calling 311 for homeless people out in the cold: you absolutely should not do that without the express consent of the person. The teams that respond work with NYPD. You are calling police, just ask first. Hypothermia can injure or kill people, so can police.

Although it would be nice/ideal, not everyone wants to or will speak with someone on the street. If you can & are familiar with resources, great. Otherwise, outreach teams & Police can offer to take one to shelter and are not there to do harm. Be productive, not divisive.

It's not divisive to state the facts. It's no secret that police often do more harm than good. Same goes for shelters. Let's offer the resources we are able, AND have a little respect for houseless NYers to let them make their own choice.

... however this is life-threatening cold and oftentimes people will want assistance, even if for the night. That said, I have spoken with street homeless individuals who have been touched by the fact that NYPD cared enough to speak with them and offer help, a cup of coffee, etc.

Folks should know what their options are, and know that they can go directly to a shelter without police interaction. It's good and important to communicate and ask permission before calling authorities. No need for the copaganda.

It doesn't hurt to help. Yes - most chronically street homeless folks know what their options are. Also, many will accept the offer on such cold nights. Agree - ask if you feel can or feel comfortable. Otherwise you are doing no harm (possibly a world of good) by calling it in.

No hello we just went over this. "Calling it in" exposes people to potential harm and ignores their agency. Nothing wrong with checking in and asking for their consent before "calling it in" ok thanks
