It's not divisive to state the facts. It's no secret that police often do more harm than good. Same goes for shelters. Let's offer the resources we are able, AND have a little respect for houseless NYers to let them make their own choice.
... however this is life-threatening cold and oftentimes people will want assistance, even if for the night. That said, I have spoken with street homeless individuals who have been touched by the fact that NYPD cared enough to speak with them and offer help, a cup of coffee, etc.
Folks should know what their options are, and know that they can go directly to a shelter without police interaction. It's good and important to communicate and ask permission before calling authorities. No need for the copaganda.
"Police often do more harm than good" is an opinionated statement - not one of fact. That there are bad apples out there does not speak for the many fine police who perform their job with compassion. I respect what you're saying in that we should respect everyone's rights...
It's a widely held opinion because it is backed by lived experience and data. I'm not here to debate the personal character of individual cops. Police misconduct is a systemic issue and a constant danger for our most marginalized neighbors. "A few bad apples" c'mon now
