The teams that respond work with NYPD. You are calling police, just ask first. Hypothermia can injure or kill people, so can police.

It's not always a friendly outreach team. In extreme cold 311 callers are reporting being routed to 911 automatically, which means a random cop car.

the shelter system can also be a very dangerous place. In fact all of it can be but for anyone seeking warm who's been turned away this is not a bad option.

Absolutely. Folks should know what their options are, and know that they can go directly to a shelter without police interaction. It's good and important to communicate and ask permission before calling authorities.
